Biography

John Cutler had a wife named Mary ____ who married, after John's death, Thomas Hewet. There are three documents showing that Mary was the widow of John Cutler and widow of ______ Hewet and mother of Samuel, Nathaniel and Thomas Cutler and mother-in-law of Onesiferous Marsh who married Hannah Cutler.

  • 14 February 1671[/2], Thomas Cutler of Charlestown and Nathaniel Cutler of Redding appointed their brother Samuel Cutler of Topsfield as attorney in connection with property that belonged to their late father John Cutler. The deed was signed by Thomas Cutler, Nathaniel Cutler, Oneseferus Marsh. A John Cutler was a witness. (No relationship is stated to this John.)[1]
  • 17 February 1671, Mary Hewet, of Suffolk, widow, formerly wife of John Cutler, deceased of Hingham and Samuell Cutler of Topswell son of said John Cutler, on behalf of his brothers and sisters, for a valuable consideration sold to John Feringe of Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts, one acre and a half of salt meadow in Hingham, commonly called Weymouth Marsh, which was given by the town of Hingham to John Cutler deceased. This deed was signed by Mary Hewet, Samuell Cutler, Nathaniel Cutler and Onisifers Mash.[1]
  • 17 February 1671, Mary Hewet, relict of John Cutler deceased of Hingham, widow and Samuel Cutler, son of John Cutler deceased for himself on behalf of his brothers (and sisters, later in the document), for a valuable consideration sold to William Hersey of Hingham the houselot of five acres more or less that was given by the town of Hingham to John Cutler, formerly husband of Mary Hewett and son of Samuel Cutler. This deed was signed by Mary Hewet, Samuell Cutler, Nathaniel Cutler and Onesiforiss Mash. [1]

Mary and John Cutler's children are estimated to have been born in the 1620s and 1630s. From this Mary's birth is estimated about 1601 and her marriage in the early 1620s.

John Cutler, of Sprowston, Norfolk, England, his wife, seven children and a servant arrived in New England in 1637.[2] They settled in Hingham, where the town gave them a house lot and other land to plant. [2]

John died in February 1638.[3]

Mary's second husband was Thomas Huet/Hewett. "Mary Hewett, widow of Thomas of Hingham, was at Deacon Ludkins', Dec. 8, 1674."[4] Mary and Thomas were married after the death of his first wife 22 May 1649.[5]

Mary survived her second husband, Thomas Huet, who died 24 May 1670.[6] After his death, records show that she was without funds to maintain herself and the Town of Hingham paid for her upkeep, eventually sending her to live with her son, Thomas. From the selectmen's first book of records:[7]

  • "1674. Item — Layd out about the Widow Huit for her maintenance the last summer until the time of her going awav, and for clothing for her and debts paid for her and for money delivered to her son for half a year's maintenance for her, and for other charges and expenses about her transportation to Charlestown, etc." "The record further shows that there were disbursements for the widow Huit for several years after."[8]
  • " These presents witness that I Thomas Cutler inhabitant of Charlestown doe acknowledg yt I have receiued one quarters pay in mony of ye selectmen of Hingham for ye keeping of my mother Mary Huitt yt should have bin paid ye sixth day of June last past & allsoe satisfaction for ye not paiing of it according to agreement both for time and place I say receiued by me Thomas Cutler this 19th of July 1676 as wittnes my Hand.[9]

Mary died in Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony on December 12, 1681. The record of her death in the Reading records reads "Hervet, Mary, mother of Thomas Cutler, Dec. 12, 1681."[10]

Research Notes

Disputed Origins : Mary Woodmansey was shown with father Robert Woodmansey with no sources on either profile. No marriage record found for John Cutler marrying Mary Woodmansey. Her disproven father is being disconnected until such time as quality sources are found. There are also no quality sources to show her last name is Woodmansey, so she has been changed to Mary Unknown.

Woodmansey-15 and UNKNOWN-76027 appear to represent the same person because: No quality sources found to support Woodmansey as a last name. Merging to Unknown. Same birth and death dates/place, same spouse John Cutler. Daughter on -15 is correct for John Cutler and Mary. Please merge.

Are there quality sources for her birth, parentage and marriage? I saw only information from the Pedigree Research File. I have found a source saying her name was Mary, but not her last name. Thank you.
